At SNI, we strive to establish a sector-wide, beyond-certification, and risk-based approach to effectively address current and emerging sustainability challenges. To support this goal, we continuously develop tools and solutions to support our participants to enhance sustainability within their cashew supply chains.
Companies in the cashew sector face increasing pressure from markets, society, and legislation to address supply chain risks, as rising demand for cashews drives greater consumer awareness, NGO scrutiny, calling for greater accountability. Cashew processing for example can be prone to social sustainability challenges, including low wages, health and safety risks in processing facilities, and a lack of transparency, often due to subcontracting practices.
At SNI, we encourage our participants to implement social sustainability standards at processing level as a first step towards human rights and environmental due diligence in their supply chains. For that, SNI developed a Basket of Standards to guide participants in their social compliance journey.
The Basket of Standards contains relevant standards for social and environmental compliance at processing level aligned with the quality requirements of SNI.
1.To create consistency and transparency
2.To avoid duplication in certification and costs
3.To enable sector engagement with standards on specific issues or methodologies
4.To stimulate knowledge sharing and interaction with standards to improve rigor and effectiveness
SNI aims to create a risk-based approach allowing current and future sustainability issues to be tackled on a sector level. Starting point is a shared vision on the main risks. SNI conducts regular risk assessments to provide clarity on the key sustainability challenges in cashew producing and processing countries. The outcome of the assessment helps SNI participants to focus on most urgent sustainability risks and to develop mitigation plans to address these risks in their area of procurement. The risk assessment offers a shared understanding of the issues that need to be tackled with priority.
