Various nuts in jar

We are happy to announce that Lorenz Snack-World has become a member of the Sustainable Nut Initiative (SNI). SNI brings key players in the nut industry together to strategically develop sustainable supply chains and a traceable nut sector. SNI’s members are committed to improve the transparency in the nut chain, strengthening the relationship with farmer cooperatives and working towards volume and quality improvement. We talked to Charles-Etienne Le Renard from Lorenz Snack-World about their motivation to join SNI.

Lorenz Snack-World is an independent family-owned company in Germany and one of the leading producers in the European snack market. They produce and distribute crisps, pretzel sticks, extruders, crackers and nuts in over 80 countries across the world. Creating snacks for over four generations, Lorenz Snack-World is characterized by a strong commitment to responsibility and values that are essential driving force and guideline for its business activities.  Act responsible for the environment and people involved in the value chains is therefore also an important aspect of Lorenz Snack-World’s sustainability strategy.

Why did Lorenz Snack-World join SNI?

Charles-Etienne Le Renard: “For four generations, Lorenz Snack-World has been creating snacks for people all around the world. We feel the responsibility to make a positive impact and contribute to the sustainable development of the society. Companies are an important and defining part of a society. Their entrepreneurial activities make a significant contribution to its growth and prosperity. As social entities, they are meant to be a place where people like to spend a large part of their lives finding joy and meaning. Thus, the work of companies is closely linked to a sustainable positive development in society.

We want to constantly improve the professionalism, sustainability and quality in our value chains. We consider the SNI-platform as an important forum for companies in the nut sector to work together on positive impact.”

What is the main challenge for Lorenz Snack-World?

“We have to ensure the availability of high quality raw materials to secure the supply of our high quality products, which our consumers trust. The social, economic and ecological conditions in the value chains of certain nut categories can however still pose major challenges today. We see it as our responsibility to contribute to positive sustainable development in these critical areas.”

What do you think SNI can bring to tackle this challenge?

“We believe that by partnering with sustainability initiatives and non-governmental organizations, our company will leverage its commitment to sustainable development significantly. The combination of our operational expertise and the know-how of external sustainability experts is effective and creates success for all parties involved.

No private organization can master the above mentioned tasks alone. Strong collaboration approaches between multiple stakeholders are needed to make real sustainable progress. SNI creates powerful coalitions with programs and initiatives with a similar goal. We think that joining the platform will help us to solve critical challenges and to improve transparency in the different nut supply chains.”

Florian Winckler, ComCashew: “The initial core group that set SNI up has invested a lot and learned even more. In order to make the next step, we should take these learnings, widen the group of companies and create critical mass. The fact that more companies like Lorenz Snack-World are joining SNI is a very positive movement. Together we can make an impact”
