The risk assessment that is executed bi-annually is the starting point for companies to determine on which sustainability topics to focus. SNI proposes an approach of verification in which verifiable impact is shown and shared with the outside world. Depending on the characteristic of the sector and the sustainability risks at stake, the verification approach will differ.
For cashew – a sector supplied by ten thousands of smallholders – one of the main challenges is the improvement of the livelihood of farmers. Companies work – jointly with their supplying cooperatives – on the improvement of this livelihood via the supply of customized services, training, tools, inputs and so on. To demonstrate that the situation improves, the companies follow at least 1% of the farmers in the supply base over time and analyse and communicate about the improvements in their farming business and livelihood.
